Excerpt from:Stories of the Sahara

Author : Echo Chan

Set against the backdrop of the War of Self-Determination of the Western Saharan peoples, this story tells the tragic love story of Basiri, the leader of the Shaharawi guerrillas, and his wife, Shaida. It celebrates the poignant song of love and destiny in the desert.

The whole novel is written in a heavy and sad tone, breaking the usual bright and easy language style of Echo Chan’s mid-career ‘desert literature’. Through this work, Chan strongly condemns the merciless destruction of people’s lives by war, and shows the helplessness and struggles of individuals under the war environment. At the same time, the novel also expresses the praise for sincere emotions and the beauty of human nature through the love story of Bassiri and Shaida. The book depicts the dynamics of ordinary people under tense situations, where peace is precious, and I want to convey the audience’s thoughts on war and peace through this play.
